On June 24, 2009, the FDA approved the use of Plan B, an emergency contraceptive, for over-the-counter use for women 17 and older. In 2006, Plan B became available to women 18 and older. Women under the age of 17 have to obtain a prescription from a health care provider. Plan B is available for all women at Women's Health Specialists' clinic sites. Read more from the Back Up Your Birth Control website.

News:

On Sunday, May 31, 2009, Dr. George Tiller was assassinated while attending his church in Wichita, Kansas. Dr. Tiller has been the target of anti-abortion extremists for decades. His clinic was vandalized, picketed, and bombed, and in 1993 he was shot in the arms by Shelley Shannon (an anti-abortion terrorists in prison for shooting Tiller and firebombing clinics). Dr. Tiller and his dedicated staff endured years of harassment from anti-abortion terrorists.

Dr. Tiller's contribution to women's health and reproductive justice cannot be understated. He continued to provide reproductive health services to women - legal later term abortions - despite the violent targets against him.

While we are saddened by the loss of a courageous and committed physician who helped many women in their time of need, we are also outraged that violence and murder continue to terrorize women's health providers. You can read more from a press release from the National Abortion Federation.

News:
The Nation Women's Law Center reported May 20, 2009, on President Obama's budget's impact on women's reproductive health: "The budget eliminates wasteful abstinence-only programs and allows states to provide more support for contraception through the Medicaid program. Unfortunately, the budget retains harmful and unjust restrictions on the use of public funds for abortion care and provides only level or insufficient funding increases for several programs that provide essential services for women, including Title X family planning". News:
A Gallup poll released on Friday, May 15, announced that 51% of Americans are now calling themselves "pro-life" on the issue of abortion and 42% pro-choice. Read the article below that critiques how the Gallup polls are conducted, and that the pro-choice vs. pro-life distinction does not get to the heart of the issue, which is how people feel about abortion policy. When interpreting the results of all polls, it is crucial to analyze how the question is asked.

For example, in rebuttal to the recent Gallup Poll, Steven Bennen stated: ...Gallup poll asked respondents, “Do you think abortions should be legal under any circumstances, legal only under certain circumstances, or illegal in all circumstances?” Here, a majority (53%) wants to see abortion legal under certain circumstances, while the other groups of respondents were evenly split.

Wild Carrot Flower and Seed Study 2009
(Daucus carota)
Herbalists Robin Rose Bennett and Mischa Schuler are beginning a two part national study of Wild Carrot (Daucus carota) seeds and flowers. The two-fold purpose of the study is first to demonstrate the effectiveness of Wild Carrot flower and seed tincture as a "morning after" herb for natural, conscious contraception and second to investigate the effectiveness of wild carrot used cyclically to promote healthy conception and pregnancy.
If you are interested in participating in either branch of this study, or want more information, please contact Robin on her web site or Mischa at Wild Carrot Herbs.

New Book!
Natural Liberty
"Want reproductive freedom?  Buy this amazing book; tell your friends about it; and read it carefully together.  Do self-examination together; get to know how your cervices looks through your menstrual cycles.  Keep this book and your speculum in a safe place.  Of course, you continue to fight for our rights, including legal abortion or better yet, the repeal of abortion laws.  But, come what may, you know that if you ever face an unwanted pregnancy, whatever the political climate, you have the tools you need.  That, my sister, is reproductive freedom." (This review is by Carol Downer.)
