"This is a great day for the people of San Francisco,” said Amy Everitt, State Director of NARAL Pro-Choice California. "This city has a long history of putting women’s health first, and I applaud Mayor Lee for taking a stand as a pro-choice leader.”
The
ordinance, which will go into effect in 30 days, is the first of its kind to be
introduced by any city or county. It holds anti-choice "crisis pregnancy
centers” (CPCs) accountable for false or deceptive advertising practices so
that women seeking comprehensive information about pregnancy, emergency
contraception, prenatal care, and abortion care are not mislead about the
limited nature of their services.
Passage of this ordinance comes in the wake of mounting evidence in California and across the country that CPCs are not only intimidating women and intentionally giving medically inaccurate reproductive-health information, but also are engaging in false advertising. Further confirming the need for this ordinance, earlier this year City Attorney Dennis Herrera sent a letter calling on a CPC in San Francisco to correct documented instances of misleading advertising practices.
